Our silicon metal production in Iceland – climate-friendly and environmentally compatible

  • 100 % green electricity: The silicon metal plant of PCC BakkiSilicon hf. in Húsavík, Iceland, is supplied with electricity exclusively from renewable – primarily geothermal – energy sources.

  • -9.65 metric tons of CO2: These are the emissions saved by our plant per metric ton of silicon metal produced, compared to the average emissions of similar plants operating in the five main silicon-metal-producing countries China, Brazil, USA, France and Norway. This was the conclusion of a PCC-commissioned study carried out by the Faculty of Energy Systems and Energy Economics at the Ruhr University Bochum under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. H.-J. Wagner.

  • Around three times higher on average – that’s how much greater the emissions from silicon metal plants located in the five primary producer countries are than those of our facility in Iceland.

  • 32,000 metric tons of silicon metal: So reads the annual production capacity of our plant which, with its two electric arc furnaces, began regular operations in October 2019.

  • Dust filtration systems: Dust emissions from our plant are almost completely eliminated from the ambient air by high-performance filtration systems.
